Kim Kardashian may not have broken the internet, but she may have broken your self-esteem.
As I scrolled through my “explore” page on my Instagram feed, I couldn’t believe what I saw. There she was. Kim Kardashian. ALL of Kim Kardashian. I was shocked at first and then frustrated. I didn’t choose to look at a pornographic photo yet there it was- staring back at me. There were a lot of thoughts that ran through my head, but the one I couldn’t shake was “What message are you trying to portray, Kim?” Maybe some feel that she’s strong and confident, but at the end of the day, she is setting an impossible, photoshopped, ridiculous “standard” of what women think they should look like.
A positive self-esteem is something that needs to be worked on daily. Part of that daily mental workout is not allowing yourself to compare yourself to others, but to rather find satisfaction in who YOU are. So as Kim dropped her dress in order to “break the internet” she was also breaking a ton of women’s self-esteem.
If you are struggling with low self-esteem. Try these four tips:
1. Give yourself daily affirmations. Whether it’s a scripture verse, a positive saying, or inspirational quotes. Start practicing positive self-talk. Changing the way you think will change the way you feel.
2. Embrace your flaws. No one is perfect! Especially Kim Kardashian. Our flaws and our strengths are what make us unique individuals. If we were all “perfect” this world would be a pretty boring place.
3. Do NOT compare yourself to others. Your standard should be the best you that you can be. It’s silly to compare yourself to a person who has a different DNA. Remember that you are you and that is pretty special because you are the only you out there!
4. Seek professional counseling. It helps to have an unbiased, outside source to help you work out your insecurities and get empowered.
As for Kim, this media stunt, too, shall pass, and hopefully she will one day use her fame to promote a healthy, respectable, positive self-image. But if that day never comes, remember that you are in charge of your self-worth and you are valuable, beautiful and most importantly YOU! And there’s nothing better than that!
