The fairer sex, as females used to be called, are brave beyond measure. Women in the United States, have more freedom and choices in their lives than ever before. However, our society still has a great many unspoken, societal expectations causing great strife for women.
One major area of strife is the stigma associated with women being less or more emotional than a given situation calls for. Women deal with this shame stigma every day in many situations, one of the most evident is how women deal with miscarriages and fertility.
Ask yourself, have you or someone you love experienced a miscarriage? Surprisingly, the answer may be different than you think.
20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage and 1 in 8 couples have difficulty getting or sustaining a pregnancy. These strong, brave women of the 21st century have continued hiding their struggles and losses, as their mothers before them did.
As a society, we need to acknowledge that the loss of a baby can be traumatic, no matter when the loss has occurred. According to multiple research, 71-75% of women who experienced a miscarriage felt they had lost a baby and thus heartache and emotional pain resulted.
We need to leave behind the archaic belief that people must go through a mourning process within 48 hours to 2 weeks after the loss. Everyone experiences grief in their own way and women should be able to grieve the loss of their child no matter when or how they passed.
Helping this new reform are a strew of Hollywood women, such as Gabrielle Union a model/actress who shared her journey and struggle with multiple miscarriages and IVF experiences in her book We’re Going to Need More than Wine. She, like many women, admit that no one is talking about these miscarriage and infertility issues. Out of fear of shame women hide the issues/loss even from others close to them.
My hope is that as more women begin to speak out about their struggles, the less taboo the experience will become and the more help women will have available.
If you or a loved one would like someone to talk to, help is available. No one has to go through this alone.
