Orlando Teen Eating Disorder Counseling

According to a study done by nationaleatingdisorders.org, approximately a half million teens struggle with eating disorders or disordered eating. Women and men, of all ages, can suffer from eating disorders.  Eating disorders do not just affect a person physically, but emotionally and psychologically as well.

Types of Eating Disorders

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder in which an individual starves him or herself and has excessive weight loss. Individuals suffering from this view themselves as fat even though they are significantly underweight.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder in which an individual eats a large amount of food, and then because of excessive guilt, purges by inducing vomiting, over exercising, fasting, or taking laxatives.

Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is an eating disorder in which an individual eats a large amount of food and does not do anything afterwards to counteract the intake. However, he or she will then experience guilt, depression, shame and disgust. People with BED will also eat when they are not hungry, eating alone out of embarrassment of intake, and overeating until they are too full.

Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified

Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified or EDNOS can be a compilation of different symptoms from the other eating disorders. This diagnosis is just as dangerous as the aforementioned disorders.

Orthorexia Nervosa is an obsession that is not as well known as the other disorders, but is very common. The term Orthorexia Nervosa actually translates to “fixation on righteous eating.” Those struggling with this obsess about the type of food they eat, how much they eat, the purity of the food, the calorie intake, etc. These are unhealthy behaviors are detrimental because it becomes all-consuming.
