Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health concern in the United States. If you just received an anxiety diagnosis, you might be experiencing a range of emotions and uncertainty about what to do next.

But there is hope! Know that very effective treatments are available and  successful!

Each type of anxiety disorder has its own treatment plan. Some common types of treatment used include talk therapy, medications, and/or complimentary health approaches (including stress and relaxation techniques).

However, you need to make sure that there are no underlying physical conditions or medication side effect causing your anxiety. Once physical conditions are ruled out, you can begin exploring options to increase your well-being.

Once you received an anxiety diagnosis, your doctor may refer you to a counselor to help you better cope with your symptoms. Before your first appointment, I suggest making a list of the following:

Your anxiety symptoms

You want to make note of when symptoms occur. Notice if anything is making your symptoms better or worse and how much they affect your day-to-day activities and interactions.

What causes you stress

You would definitely want to include any major life changes or stressful events you might have dealt with recently. Stress can be a very common precursor to developing an Anxiety Disorder.

Any family history of mental health problems

Anxiety can have a strong genetic link. Therefore, make sure to note if your parents, grandparents, siblings or children have dealt with any mental health issues.

All medications you’re taking

This includes any prescribed medications, vitamins, herbs or other supplements.

An anxiety diagnosis can greatly impact even the smallest details of life. Therefore, it is essential to get help and learn how to remain strong during difficult times.

It can be very helpful to build a personal library of useful websites and helpful books. Remember knowledge is power! Be mindful of triggers and stressors will also help you to live your life with fewer limitations.

Lastly, I advise you to avoid drugs and alcohol. These substances may seem helpful at first, but in the end it messes with your emotional balance, sleep cycles, and medications or supplements you might be taking. Also know that coffee and energy drinks can actually worsen anxiety!

The more proactive you are in response to receiving an anxiety diagnosis, the higher likelihood exists that you will learn how to better manage your condition and symptoms.
